Invest in Life, Not War
The Human Genome Project is sometimes reported to have a cost of $3 billion. However, this figure refers to the total projected funding over a 15-year period (1990-2005) for a wide range of scientific activities related to genomics. These include studies of human diseases, experimental organisms (such as bacteria, yeast, worms, flies, and mice); development of new technologies for biological and medical research; computational methods to analyze genomes; and ethical, legal, and social issues related to genetics. Human genome sequencing represents only a small fraction of the overall 15-year budget. (Source: www.ornl.gov)
When it comes to investing in these kinds of research that has potential to revolutionizing the human health care, our politicians become tight-wads.
On the other hand, they do not hesitate spending over 6 billion dollars to bribe an "ally" (Turkey) for allowing use of their air strips and their land as a staging area for war on Iraq. They don't seem to even blink when it comes to blowing off hundres of billions of dollars, even when US economy is so down, on getting rid of a dictator that Pres. GW so dislikes.
So let us sum up this political accentricity.
The cost of:
* Research on Human Genome over 15 years: ...................... Only $3 Billion * Bribing a so called "ally" for letting us bomb its neighbor... Over $6 Billion * Blowing up a foreign Dictator Pres. GW dislikes............... Over $100 Billion * Having politicians that listen to "The Will of The People" ... PRICELESS...
What are they smoking, man!
